Jim Kokkinakis is also a Senior Lecturer at the Optometry School at the university of NSW and teaches keratoconus management and fitting for the Advanced Contact Lens Studies course. This course is a post-graduate course, which means only practicing experienced optometrists can choose to attend. He also regularly lectures to both optometrists and ophthalmologists in Australia and around the world.

Keratoconus is a degenerative condition of the cornea. There are surgical and non surgical treatment options. Only a comprehensive assessment by an optometrist specialist can determine which treatment is right for you. Keratoconus assessment and fitting of specialised contact lenses is a complex process. It is very important, especially in teenage years when keratoconus is usually first diagnosed, that a practitioner with extensive experience takes control of the management. Even though keratoconus is not a blinding eye condition, significant progression, corneal scarring and unnecessary surgery such as corneal transplantation can be avoided by expert consultation and care.
