Additional Information

Pre-planning a funeral for yourself or a loved one is a wonderful opportunity for you to take care of many of the details that come with end of life decisions. Contact us at your convenience for an appointment to discuss flexible pre-payment options.

For 150 years, it has been our great privilege to serve families in the Charleston, SC community and beyond before, during and after the time of a loved one’s passing. At J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Chapels and Crematory, it is our desire to continue in the endeavor to help you create meaningful and responsible funeral arrangements for yourself and for those you love.

Funeral planning can involve many details, and making final wishes known before the time of need is one way to help ease the burden of what is often a difficult time for family and friends. Whether your desire is for burial or cremation, we can help you arrange the details involved with planning.

We encourage you to talk about options for end of life care and funeral plans with family members, friends, clergy and other professionals with whom you are comfortable. We are here to answer questions you may have and to discuss the financial benefits of pre-funding a funeral. For more information, please contact us at any of our five locations.

For many, a choice is made of a traditional funeral service with cremation as the final disposition, rather than ground burial. This option allows the family to blend both traditional and special wishes together to provide an even more personalized celebration of life. There may be a traditional visitation, and during the funeral, the casket is present at the service. The body may be cremated in a casket or special cremation container and arrangements for final placement of the cremated remains may be determined with a funeral director.

A service can be held with an urn present following a cremation. These types of services allow family and friends to gather at places of worship, cemeteries, homes, and other locations. If your family wishes to have either a private viewing or a formal visitation with the body present, we will assist you with those arrangements before the cremation takes place.

The cremation process requires a casket or an alternative cremation container holding the deceased to be placed into a cremation retort. The cremated remains are then placed in an urn chosen by your family and made available for you to keep, have placed in a niche or columbarium, scatter or bury.

Our cremation facilities are staffed by certified crematory specialists who follow strict ethical and professional standards. Once the body of your loved one is taken into our care, we perform the cremation process with dignity from start to finish. We will be there to walk you through all the necessary paperwork and to assist you in determining the type of cremation option to best suit your needs as you seek to honor the life that was lived.

We have staff dedicated to handling the process of all required authorizations and approvals for the cremation process and the care of your loved one follows a well-tracked process from the moment the deceased leaves the place of death until the delivery of cremated remains to your family for final disposition.

Product and Services

The family of funeral professionals at Stuhr Funeral Home encourages your family to incorporate unique customs into the funeral services we help plan and conduct. For some, traditional burial best incorporates all which has been part of the family for generations; for others, a funeral followed by cremation may be the preferred option. With any service, there are decisions which will need to be made and we want to provide some basic information to help you.

The traditional funeral remains the standard service for many of the families served by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. A traditional service offers an opportunity for family and friends to gather, clergy or others to offer stories and words of comfort, and a time for favorite music and/or hymns to be played or sung. This form of service allows family and friends to walk through the grieving process as one – supporting each other in very visible and meaningful ways.

At its very basic understanding the traditional funeral consists of a visitation, a service of remembrance at either a place of worship or the funeral chapel, and burial or entombment in a faith, church or community cemetery. For many families, this is “the tradition” and it is a tradition our family here at Stuhr’s seeks to uphold.

For some religious and personal traditions, direct burial is the service of choice. Direct burial involves graveside services, with no embalming or visitation. Your funeral director can provide you specific information on this option and will discuss with you any fees associated should you decide to hold a graveside service at the time of burial.
