Oak has always been one of, if not the most popular choice of timbers when considering a new staircase, or re-design of an existing flight. It’s neutral colour and beautiful grain can be incorporated into a huge range of stair designs, whilst flowing smoothly with almost any choice of room décor. Natural oak can be finished with a clear sealant, further enriched in colour, aged or even mixed with other colours and materials without losing any of its character and appeal. With such diversity and durability it’s no surprise that oak stairs are today installed in everything from the most classical to the most contemporary of homes.

Oak is a highly sought after and extremely well known species of timber, but there is an equally durable and diverse species, which is up to 20% more cost effective. Despite being lesser known, ash, like oak is a hardwood that’s well suited to stair design. It’s naturally light in colour, so affords a slightly greater variation for shade alteration and also possesses a highly appealing grain character. Ash can even be colour matched so closely to oak that only the trained eye would be able to spot the difference.
