Avis Real Estate - San Jose
Martha Jolicoeur was first known throughout equestrian circles as a world class competitor, and now she has established herself as a top notch realtor that caters exclusively to the equestrian clientele she has built along her way through the ranks.
Jolicoeur began riding at the age of seven in Westport , CT , at Nimrod Farm with Ronnie Mutch. At the age of fifteen, she moved on to train with the current Chef d’Equipe of the United States Equestrian Team, George Morris, for her junior years. In these years Jolicoeur rode to many titles on her small junior hunter, Movie Star. These accomplishments include capturing the best child rider award in Harrisburg , PA , at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and numerous circuit championships at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Palm Beach , FL.
Jolicoeur then decided to pursue her education at St. Lawrence University located in Canton , NY . An overachiever from the start, she attained a double major in both Psychology and Sociology and loved every second of her time there. It was during college that she began training with Canadian Show Jumping superstar and eight time Olympian Ian Miller.
“I learned so much about riding and life in my time with Ian,” stated Jolicoeur.
“I will never forget when he told me that I knew how to ride, but I just wasn’t competitive enough. Then he became determined to show me how to find my competitive streak,” she related.Find it she did. When she finished school, she started training with United States Olympian Norman Dello Joio in Bedford , NY , while living and working in Manhattan , NY . She began showing on the grand prix level, and in 1985 was AGA Rookie of the Year.
Jolicoeur continued competing and traveled on the European tour with George Morris. Her travels took her to England , Holland , and Belgium numerous times and laid the foundation for the many relationships that would later build her equestrian clientele for her real estate business.
Jolicoeur was previously based out of her farm in Virginia where she first obtained her real estate license in 1991. She commuted to Wellington and watched her business soar. “I get as much enjoyment out of working in this business as I did when I was competing,” she said. “It is great to see the process, knowing the work that is behind the scenes and seeing a positive outcome. It is as exciting as waiting to see if you won the class. Now my aim is to win the respect of my clients. I want my clients to know that I will work hard to earn this respect and treat them honestly and fairly,” she added.
“Ian Miller once told me, ‘Winners never quit and quitters never win.’ That saying keeps me going to this day,” said Jolicoeur. “Sometimes, when I have a challenge with a transaction, I equate it to falling off in the schooling ring before a class. Even though you fell off, it does not mean that you can’t go in the show ring and still have a chance to win the class.”
When it comes to real estate and equestrian sport, Martha Jolicoeur has successfully combined two passions into one. A former grand prix show jumping competitor, the same qualities that once made Jolicoeur successful in the show ring have helped her to build a career as one of Wellington’s top-ranked real estate agents.
Married to world-renowned horse trainer Pierre Jolicoeur, Jolicoeur first began coming to Wellington as a seasonal resident in 1979. In 2005, she and her family made the move permanently, selling their farm in Virginia in order to make Wellington their year-round home. While Martha’s real estate skills were easily transferrable, it is her intimate knowledge of the equestrian community and its unique needs that have made her an asset to the Wellington community.
Jolicoeur’s family has thrived in Wellington, with Pierre’s saddle design and jump building businesses both excelling. Pierre also provides an added asset for Jolicoeur’s clients, advising on farm planning and home renovation projects. Their daughter, Isabel, has put her life-long riding skills to good use as a member of the Varsity Equestrian Team at University of Georgia. Following in her parent’s footsteps, Isabel is interested in combining her hobbies into a career in real estate and equine law.
The same thrill that Jolicoeur once felt competing is now found by matching people with a home that truly fits their lifestyle. Hard-working and honest, Jolicoeur’s well-deserved reputation has earned her a loyal clientele that includes the biggest names in horse sport.
“I am lucky that I get to work with so many special and smart people who excel at what they do, whether it is riding or other business,” Jolicoeur said. “Over the years, my business has grown, and I’ve added fellow agent Angela Pappas to the team, allowing us to cover more elements of the real estate market.”Buying or selling a property with Martha Jolicoeur means there will be one more fan cheering from the sidelines, as she enjoys seeing her clients succeed both at home and in the competition arena.
