According to the National Institutes of Health, Sleep Apnea affects more than 12 million Americans. In addition to daytime fatigue and being more accident prone, Sleep Apnea sufferers behind the wheel are said to be more dangerous than drunk drivers. Untreated, Sleep Apnea can contribute to heart attacks, stroke, high blood pressure, weight gain, depression, impotency and frequent headaches and migraines.
In some people, the windpipe that brings air into the body is blocked during sleep. This keeps the lungs from getting enough air. People who have Sleep Apnea can stop breathing for up to a minute at a time. These pauses can occur up to 400 times per night with consequences that can be serious and even life-threatening.
Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a common treatment for sleep apnea. The CPAP machine pushes air through the airway at a pressure high enough to keep the airway open during sleep.
