Additional Information

Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth which are supported by surrounding soft and hard tissue of the oral cavity. Conventional dentures are removable; however there are many different denture designs. Some of which rely on clipping onto other teeth or dental implants. Dentures can help patients in improving chewing ability by replacing the edentulous area with teeth. Dentures also provide the visual appearance of having natural teeth.

Amalgam Fillings - Amalgam is a mixture of metals and can stand up to heavy chewing and biting. Amalgam fillings are particularly useful for restoring molars in the back of the mouth where chewing load is greatest and are also used in the back teeth because amalgam is silver in color. This material is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and very durable.

Composite Fillings - Composite fillings are bonded to the tooth and match the color of your teeth, making this a popular filling material. Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth for a composite filling, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam.

Crowns - also known as a cap is a covering that permanently encases the entire tooth surface and restores the tooth to its original size and shape. A crown is recommended when a tooth cannot be restored by a filling. Crowns are diagnosed when there are fracture lines or cracks on a tooth, a lot of decay is present, severe broken tooth, a tooth that has had a root canal, big fillings (usually amalgam) that have broken down over time and are compromising the tooth.

Fixed Bridge - is a restoration that is used to replace one or more consecutive missing teeth permanently. A bridge consists of crowns that are fused together and are attached to the adjacent teeth on either side of the missing space.

Dentures and Partial Dentures - are used to replace multiple or all teeth. They are removable appliances that are taken out usually at night. Dentures replace all missing teeth and a partial replace multiple teeth and usually clasps onto remaining teeth.

Root Canal Therapy - is performed when deep decay or trauma affects the nerves in the center of the tooth. A root canal involves removing the nerves and blood vessels that are found in the center of the tooth using small files. After the nerves and blood vessels are removed the space is filled with a rubber like material. After the tooth has had a root canal it is recommended the tooth get a crown to restore and strengthen the tooth.

Composite Filling - are fillings that match the shade of your teeth. Many patients like to replace the silver amalgam fillings with the white composite material so that you can’t even tell you had a filling done! Less tooth structure is removed when the dentist prepares the tooth for a composite filling, and this may result in a smaller filling than that of an amalgam.

Porcelain Crowns and Bridges - are made of porcelain that match the shade of your teeth and make a great restoration. Porcelain restorations reflect the translucence of natural teeth. Crowns are a covering that permanently encases the entire tooth surface and restores the tooth to its original size and shape. A bridge is a restoration that is used to replace one or more consecutive missing teeth permanently.

Implants are used to replace missing teeth the most natural way, or used to help keep dentures in place. A post is surgically placed in jaw and after healing time determined by the oral surgeon a crown is placed onto an abutment (which is also placed by the oral surgeon). An implant mimics a natural tooth the best and has a high success rate.
