Description
http://www.mitchells-glos.co.uk/ Welcome to Mitchell’s Facebook Page, one of the South West’s most recognised and respected companies offering a wide and varied range of services. We have not always been good at communicating our range of services and shouting about how good we are and we hope you like our new website and the big bright buttons will help us convey this message.
Following an apprenticeship as an electrician in Bristol, Lionel Cadogan Mitchell gained experience in America before returning to Gloucester to set up his own business in 1905.
His early work started in the coal mines of the Forest of Dean providing electric lighting and soon developed into fitting generating plant and wiring in factories, offices and large houses. Within 10 years Mr Mitchell was training his own apprentices to become his future workforce.
1914 – A shop was established in St Aldate Street, Gloucester, which served as the base for the electrical installation contracting business. As mains electricity became available to homes and businesses so the demand for appliances appeared. Lighting fittings and shades, electric irons, boiling rings and toasters eventually grew into electric cookers, washing machines. Industrial work developed in the manufacturing industries of Gloucestershire with electric motors, dynamos, lifts and machines powered by electricity becoming the norm.
1920 – Mr Mitchell acquired larger retail premises in Northgate Street where the shop became one of the main suppliers and repairers of electrical appliances in the city, also supplying radio receivers and repairs.
1935 – Cold storage and ice manufacture was growing and electricity taking over from steam and other forms of power. The butcher’s coldroom and farmer’s milk cooling led Mitchell’s into the refrigeration business and it was not long before the domestic refrigerator was selling from 52 Northgate Street and the commercial refrigeration business was developed as distributors for York Refrigeration.
By the later thirties the company was well established and during the Second World War provided many electricians at the Gloster Aircraft Company in Brockworth to keep wartime aircraft production going. Wiring looms for the aircraft were also assembled at their Northgate Street premises.
In the fifties television signals had spread to Gloucester and Mitchell’s became retail agents for some of the leading brands with in the home repair facilities available as well.
1959 – L C Mitchell died and his son Bob Mitchell succeeded him as Managing Director.
1977 – With the rise of the discount retailer in Gloucester the retail business was sadly closed. 1977 also saw the death of Bob Mitchell at the rather young age of 62 and the business passed to his son, Norman Mitchell, who remains Chairman today. Premises had been acquired in Bristol Road long before 1977 and the electrical contracting business had moved to avoid the tightening parking restrictions in the City centre. The commercial refrigeration and air conditioning team was moved into the old farm buildings of L C Mitchell in Hucclecote.
1982 – When more space became available adjacent to our Bristol Road premises a large purpose built workshop and offices were built and the refrigeration and air conditioning team moved to the head office site.
2000 - Garrion Leeds was appointed Managing Director and has continued to direct Mitchell’s in their pursuit of exemplary service to all of our customers.

Specific Services
Mitchell’s was originally started as a company of electricians wiring housing stock in 1905 at the advent of electricity in the home. As the company evolved it diversified into Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and has always led the field as new technologies and innovations were designed and released. We have since added a Heating Division, Data and IT Section and offer a complete Facilities support team to companies that require the complete package.
We are now a multi-skilled company using all the latest design tools including AutoCAD and computerised calculation programmes. We have undertaken turnkey projects encompassing all disciplines for the provision of commercial offices and premises. We also work within the public sector and are a well respected contractor working in schools, libraries, hospitals and other public buildings.
Going Green
We advise our clients on the suitability of all types of energy efficient products which help not only their specific workspace, but also the environment in general. From air to water heat pumps to self intelligent lighting, there are considerable savings in energy to be found if you know where to look and how to get the best from the equipment now on offer.
We can retro fit inverter controlled fans, save water, turn lights off when not required, harness the power of the sun and heat and cool spaces in the most frugal way.
And if you are looking for Oil Boiler Service Forest of Dean, we are also the company to call, having offered this service throughout Gloucestershire for many years.
Trade memberships
As such a long and established contractor we are active members with many professional and trade associations including the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association (HVCA), the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), NICEIC, Refcom, Gas Safe and Oftec. We are also accredited contractors with the Contractor Health and Safety Scheme (CHAS), Safe Contractor, EXOR and Constructionline.
Air conditioning is now commonplace, yet despite a bewildering array of new technologies, there is no standard solution.
Design
Every client requires an individual design to ensure that their specific requirements are achieved, which requires a highly skilled design team working with the latest software and knowledge of the specific equipment offerings. There is no “one size fits all” option so kit selection is critical to ensure that the desired results are obtained.
Our engineers visit site and take into account all the factors that are relevant to providing the client with a cost effective and efficient package to suit their requirements. We also work closely with architects, consultants and project managers on larger project teams giving them valuable advice and assistance.
Environmental Considerations
Mitchell’s have been a leading force in the design and installation of environmental control equipment, be it for a small office or a large computer suite, all the relevant technology and experience is available here.
As a client you can take advantage of our specialist knowledge and drive to stay abreast of an ever changing market place. We install the most modern systems including inverter driven equipment, reverse cycle heat pumps and temperature and humidity controls.
Installation
All our installations are undertaken using our own trained and experienced engineers who have all achieved the latest standards in the industry to maintain our membership of both the HVCA and Refcom. All works are planned to minimise the impact on our clients and ensure that all future servicing can be carried out quickly and efficiently. We plan for the lifetime of the system and not just for the installation.
Refrigeration
The variety and efficiency of today’s refrigeration systems and equipment can appear daunting, but at Mitchell’s we have been at the forefront of the developments in refrigeration since the industry began!
Experience
We are fortunate to be able to rely on a blend of both solid experience and knowledge of the most up to date technologies, allowing us to offer the most complete design, installation and service to all our clients.
We have worked with all types of refrigeration for the catering industry, small retail outlets, supermarkets and restaurant chains, for both storage, product display and cold rooms.
It’s all about trust!
Whatever type of equipment, for whatever application, we know that we have the expertise to satisfy your requirements. You can trust us to give you valuable and considered advice and service as a matter of course. And we don’t just give you what suits our portfolio because we are not tied to any one manufacturer and can therefore select the best equipment to best match your needs.
Project Planning
We find that due to the experience of the individuals concerned and their specific knowledge of using the latest planning software, installations will progress with the minimum of impact to your business. All Project Managers are well versed with working with other trades, project planning software and will deliver your project on time and on budget.
Service and Maintenance
With all the new cutting edge equipment being installed, there is one irrefutable fact, and that is that all plant needs to be cared for and looked after correctly. Maintenance is where the smart money gets spent; getting the best value out of the initial capital expenditure will revolve around getting longevity from the same equipment.
24/7, 365 Days a Year
Whichever the day and whatever the time we will respond to a call for maintenance. We look after all types of companies and tailor our packages to suit the individual requirements of each client. Our engineers are fully trained and due to the long term relationship we enjoy with most of our contract customers, they quickly become conversant with each specific item of plant on any site. Because to this, clients benefit from more efficient service by drawing on the knowledge of our service engineers.
Systems
Mitchell’s have a comprehensive bespoke computer system to ensure that all routine maintenance is carried on time in accordance with the contract. We label every item of equipment with a unique asset number which is logged on the computer database complete with a location description, model and serial numbers. We also record the quantity and type of refrigerant in each system (where possible) which in conjunction with the maintenance records can be used for the record keeping requirements of the F-Gas regulations. If there is a breakdown or failure of the equipment, by using the unique asset numer, we can be sure the engineer will be armed with the correct information to attend to the the right item of plant and will also have access to any historical records of the equipment.
System Log in
Some of our clients like to be able to view “live” service records rather than having pdf records issued to them. To cater for this it is possible to issue secure login credentials to individual site files or equipment records depending on the user requirements.
2079 Category 1 Engineers
All of our engineers attained the latest City and Guilds 2079 Refrigerant Handling qualification well in advance of the July 2011 requirement, emphasising our pro-active approach to training and industry standards.
Where possible we try to send an engineer who has previously been to site and is familiar with the equipment to minimise down time and provide the best possible service, however, the exchange of information and communication between our engineers means that when this is not possible you will still receive excellent attention.
Project Management
With all the key skills covered within the company it was a progressive step for us to offer a complete Project Management service. A strong and capable Project Manager will more than pay for themselves, delivering the project on time and within budget.
Planning
Most people have a good idea of what they want, the people they need and the resources required to get a scheme off the ground.
However, not many make the best use of any of these three key areas and can end up with a cost that far exceeds the original budget. Our people start with the client during the planning stages of each contract, engineering as much of the risk out before the works even start. Much of the project work that we help with is a complete service, from planning, through installation, commissioning, witness testing and completion.
Health and Safety
Many companies can fall foul of Health and Safety Legislation which is specific to our type of project work. Our Project Managers are fully conversant with the Construction Design & Management regulations (CDM) and have worked as both Principal Contractor and Contractor within this process. We have liaised with clients, architects, designers and other trades to ensure that the project can be delivered correctly.
Design
Our people have an in depth knowledge of all the building services required and will input, with the clients approval, into the design of a specific scheme. We also work to ensure that future maintenance is considered and try to ensure that it will be as straight forward as possible and more importantly safe for those that have to look after the systems in the future.
Approach
Our approach is simple really, we are here to support our clients and run their projects leaving them to do their day job!
