We understand that many patients have been disappointed at other physiotherapy clinics due to some very common issues: a lack of clinical experience of the physiotherapists. a lack of time for proper physiotherapy treatments in cheap “group therapy” practices.

using only outdated medical technology (eg: ultrasound and heat packs).poor understanding of your problems by the physio and a superficial explanation of your treatment plan.We understand that proper physiotherapy is NOT simply:exercise and stretching.expensive massage.ultrasound and heat packs.

Additional Information

The answer is Yes! If this issue is caught early enough before too much damage has occurred then physiotherapy is very effective to help heal a slipped disc and avoid surgery. The patient must be compliant with appointments, do exercises at home and practice good body mechanics.

It is very important to form a good team between the patient, the physiotherapist and the patient’s physician. If all of these factors are met, then physiotherapy is very successful in treating a slipped disc and the need for surgery is greatly reduced and almost eliminated.

Product and Services

Back pain is caused by a number of factors and can range from mild to severe. Muscle strain, bulging disks between the vertebrae, fractures, pinched nerves and even an injury to a rib can cause back pain. Other less common causes are tumors, arthritis and even infections.

The muscle groups that hold up the spine are usually the biggest culprits and the patient can experience pain from muscle strain caused by bending, stooping or lifting too much weight. Improper body mechanics are the number one biggest cause of back muscle strain.

People whose work requires heavy lifting without paying attention to good body mechanics may experience back strain at some point in their career. Athletes or people who exercise frequently who do not stretch before exercise can often experience back strain. Even the average person can strain their back in normal everyday life.

Another common cause of back pain is a bulging disk. This occurs from aging itself or when a back injury is severe enough to cause the cushion between the vertebrae, otherwise known as, the disk, to bulge out. This is a very painful condition and can be pretty common in any age.

Spinal fractures can cause severe back pain and are usually caused by compression of the spine. Fractures to the ribs can also cause back pain since the ribs are connected to the spine with both the connecting joint and the associated muscles.

Pinched nerves usually happen around the sciatic nerve area in the lower lumbar region on either side of the spine. This is a very common cause of back pain and can lead to severe pain with movement.

Tumors anywhere in the chest, neck or abdomen that put pressure on the spine can cause back pain. Arthritis in the joints of the back, neck and shoulder can cause severe back pain and an infection in the bones called, osteomyelitis, can be very painful. In between each vertebrae in the spine are discs that provide shock absorbing cushion so the bones to not rub together.

Every time you move in any direction, the discs are there to protect your back. With a slipped disc, there has been some sort of trauma or injury that causes the disc to “bulge” and protrude beyond the edge of the vertebrae. Know that if you have what they call a “slipped disc” it will never actually “slip” out of place, as it will continue to be attached. This can be a very painful condition and serious if left untreated.

A slipped disc is actually a disc that is pinched, twisted, slightly torn or beginning to degenerate. In an injury or condition of the back, inflammation can occur around the disc and cause the disc to swell. Then we you move with the injury, it can further cause swelling or tears in the disc.

Once a disc has “slipped” it usually does not get better on its own and requires some sort of treatment. Untreated slipped discs can progress over time and are associated with chronic neck and back pain.
